We sat down with Susan Nieland to discuss her namesake brand, which we are in love with. We recently styled Susan's jewelry with our Spring collection and love how the brass and sea glass jewelry reflect our tropical, global vibe.
All of Susan's stones are one of a kind. They come from the beaches of the East End of Long Island: Georgica, East Hampton Main Beach, Sagg Main, Maidstone, and Ditch Plains are some of the many beaches they go to collect their stones.
Each piece of jewelry they create is unique. No two stones will ever be the same, each piece will reflect the uniqueness of nature herself.
What inspired you to start your jewelry line?
The idea for a line of beach stone jewelry came to me when I first moved out to East Hampton, NY, 20 years ago. I remember being so inspired by the light and beauty of this place! I started collecting beach stones and thinking they would be so beautiful as jewelry. They were magical! They felt so smooth and ancient and grounding, I knew that they would impart a sense of connection to the earth with the wearer. I was still selling my line of 18k gold and fine gemstone jewelry at the time and starting to feel guilty about how some of the small mines I got my stones from were getting mined out so using stones that didn't have to be pulled out of the earth seemed like a better choice for me.
How would you style the jewelry with our pieces?
Layers, layers, layers! I love how Stephanie wears her jewelry, the layers look so sexy and stylish and relaxed. That's exactly how I would describe Figue clothing as well so it's a perfect match.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my family, my friends and this beautiful planet we are so fortunate to call our home.
Tell us 2 things people don’t know about you?
1. I play bass in an all girl (albeit middle aged girl) rock band
2. I'm from the West, I grew up in Colorado and miss the mountains a lot.
What star sign are you?
I was born on the cusp of Virgo and Libra and I definitely have a little of both signs in me - sometimes not the easiest combination!
What is your favorite animal?
Our 16 year old Yorkie, Biscuit.
Who is your dream person to have a meal with?
Hard question but I just finished reading her book and love her so I'm going to say Michelle Obama. She's so excellent!
What is your biggest wish?
That we can figure out a peaceful way to save the planet before it's too late.
What is your dream destination?
Tough to choose, but usually I find myself dreaming of hiking in a high mountain range - it could be anywhere, Colorado, the Alps, Patagonia (a place I haven't hiked yet but would love to)
What's next for you?
A world tour with my band ;)
Anything else you would like us to know?
Yes! I want to give a shout out to the Surfrider Foundation. It is an organization I am volunteering with currently to try to phase out single use plastics in our community. We are starting by helping restaurants to become Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR). Surfrider has a template for volunteers and restaurants to help make the transition easier. When the restaurant is compliant, Surfrider puts them on their OFR map on their website so when you go into a community and want to support an Ocean Friendly Restaurant you can check the map and go there. It's a great program and I encourage everyone to try to get involved in their own communities!! Go to Surfrider.org and let's help clean up the oceans!
